These Terms of Use govern the use of Lex by ALMA ("Lex") at lex.alma.dev and in the Lex app for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Please read them carefully: you must accept them to create an account. How we handle your personal data is set out in the Lex Privacy Policy.

1. Who we are

Lex is provided by Albuquerque de Matos, Unipessoal, Lda (ALMA), NIPC (tax and company number) 516746596, address Rua Canto da Maya 1, 8.º, 1070-372 Lisboa, Portugal.

Contact: support, support@alma.dev; legal and privacy matters, legal@alma.dev. More about ALMA in Legal information.

2. What Lex is

Nature of the service. Lex is a tool for legal research and legal information. ALMA is not a law firm or a firm of solicitadores, does not provide legal consultation (consulta jurídica) or representation, and does not perform acts reserved to lawyers or solicitadores (Portuguese Law 10/2024 of 19 January). Using Lex does not create a lawyer-client relationship or a mandate.

Answers are generated automatically by artificial intelligence systems from Lex's sources and are not reviewed by people; they may contain errors or omissions or be out of date. Quotes are compared automatically with the stored text of the sources and those that are not found are flagged, but the interpretation is not checked. Always check the official sources before using an answer, especially in court filings. For advice on a specific case, consult a lawyer or solicitador.

Lex shows provisions, decisions and legal scholarship and explains them in general terms. It is not meant to analyse the specific case of the person using it, tell you what to do in your situation, predict the outcome of a case of yours, or prepare documents for you to sign or file with a court or any other body.

Intended purpose. Lex is intended for legal research by legal professionals, students and researchers. It is not intended to be used by courts, other judicial authorities, arbitral tribunals, julgados de paz (local courts of limited jurisdiction) or alternative dispute resolution bodies to examine or decide cases, nor to assess students or take automated decisions about people.

The collection. Lex holds copies of published official texts (Portuguese and European Union legislation, case law and legislative initiatives) and references to legal scholarship, and keeps them up to date from the official sources. Each document shows its source and official link. Coverage is not complete and updates may lag: the version with official value is the one published by the official source (for example, the Diário da República).

3. Your account

  • To create an account you must be 18 or older and have the capacity to enter into contracts.
  • Give accurate details and keep your email up to date: it is how we contact you.
  • Each account belongs to one person. Don't share your password.
  • Keep your password safe and, if you can, use a passkey. If you suspect someone has used your account, change your password and tell us at support@alma.dev.

4. Acceptable use

When using Lex, you must not:

  • extract, copy or download the collection systematically or by automated means (for example with bots or scraping programs), or use it to build a competing service;
  • get around usage limits or technical or security measures, or try to access other people's accounts or data;
  • abuse the "Request a document" feature, for example with bulk requests or links that are not from official sources;
  • enter, store or share unlawful content, or information you are not entitled to process or share;
  • use Lex for purposes contrary to the intended purpose in section 2, in particular to examine or decide cases or to assess students;
  • use Lex to harass, deceive or harm other people, or for unlawful activities;
  • disrupt or overload the service.

5. Your content

What you write and keep in Lex (questions, topics, notes, annotations and, if the feature is available, documents you upload) remains yours. You give ALMA only the permission needed to provide the service: to store that content, process it to give you answers (including sending it to the artificial intelligence models listed in the Privacy Policy) and show it to you and to the people you share it with. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies other people have already imported or can still import (section 8) and what you kept in spaces shared with other people. ALMA does not use your content to train artificial intelligence models or for advertising.

Only upload or share content you have the right to use. Documents you upload stay private in your account.

Unlawful content. If we receive a substantiated notice that content stored in Lex is unlawful, or we otherwise become aware of it, we may remove it or disable access to it. In that case we explain our decision and the reasons for it, unless the law prevents us, and you can contest it by replying to our email: a person reviews the decision. To report unlawful content, see section 19.

6. Other people's information and professional secrecy

Only enter information about other people that you are entitled to process, and only what your research needs. Describe the facts anonymously whenever you can.

If you are bound by professional secrecy (for example Article 92 of the Portuguese Bar Association Statute, the Estatuto da Ordem dos Advogados), it is for you to decide what information you enter in Lex; we recommend that you don't enter details that identify clients or other people.

ALMA treats what you write in Lex as confidential: it uses it only to provide the service to you, does not use it to train models, does not sell it, shares it only with the processors listed in the Privacy Policy and with the people you choose to share it with, and only looks at it at your request, to keep the service secure or where the law requires it. On request, before you start using Lex, ALMA will sign a written confidentiality declaration. If an authority demands access to your content, we will tell you, where the law allows, so that you can invoke professional secrecy.

7. Artificial intelligence

  • Lex's answers are generated by artificial intelligence. Lex's own models run on Cloudflare's Workers AI service. Lex may in future also use Claude, from Anthropic, but only after asking for your permission, which you will be able to withdraw in Settings.
  • Each answer shows which model wrote it.
  • Artificial intelligence systems can give wrong, incomplete or out-of-date answers, even when they sound confident. Before using any statement of fact or law from an answer, check it independently, in the cited sources and in the official sources.
  • What is sent to the models and what happens to it is described in the Privacy Policy.

8. Sharing

You can send topics and annotations to other Lex users or save them as a file. The recipient can import a copy, which then belongs to them and does not disappear if you delete the original. Until it is imported or declined, you can take the share back. The share can be imported for 180 days after it was sent, unless it is declined or taken back sooner, even if you delete your account in the meantime. Before sharing, make sure you may share the information, especially data about clients or other people.

9. Price and paid plans

Lex is free at the moment. ALMA may offer paid plans or credits in the future. Before any payment, you will receive the pre-contract information the law requires (including the total price with VAT, the duration, renewal, how to cancel and the right of withdrawal), and you will only be charged at your express request. Paid plans will have their own conditions, which will supplement these Terms. If we change what is free, we tell you as set out in section 10.

10. Availability and changes

Availability. We work to keep Lex available and its collection up to date, but there may be interruptions, for example for maintenance, technical faults or faults at the official sources. Where possible, we announce planned interruptions in advance.

Changes to the service. We may change Lex for these reasons: to comply with the law or decisions of authorities; for security reasons; because an official source has changed or is no longer available; to fix errors; or to improve the service and add features. If a change has a significant negative impact on how you use Lex, we tell you by email at least 30 days in advance, unless the law or the security of the service requires a shorter period.

Changes to these Terms. For the same reasons, or to reflect new features or plans, we may change these Terms. We tell you by email at least 30 days before the new version takes effect, unless the law requires a shorter period. If you don't agree, you can stop using Lex and delete your account, at no cost, before that date or within the following 30 days. Earlier versions remain available on this page.

11. Suspension and termination

By you. You can stop using Lex and delete your account at any time, in Settings → Sign-in & security → Delete account. Before that, you can save your topics and annotations as a .lex file. What happens to your data afterwards is explained in the Privacy Policy.

By ALMA. We may suspend or close an account in case of a serious or repeated breach of these Terms, unlawful content, a risk to the security of the service or of other people, or where the law requires it. Except in serious or urgent cases, we warn you first and give you the chance to respond. The decision is taken or reviewed by a person, we explain the reasons, and you can contest it by replying to our email.

If ALMA stops providing Lex, we tell you by email at least 30 days in advance, so that you can save your content.

12. Liability

ALMA is liable as provided by law.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits ALMA's liability for harm to life, health or physical integrity, for damage caused intentionally or with gross negligence (by ALMA or by anyone acting on its behalf), or any other liability or consumer right that the law does not allow to be excluded or limited.

Lex's answers are general legal information, generated without knowing all the facts of a case, and should be checked against the official sources before they are used.

13. Intellectual property

Lex's software, its design, the brand and the selection, organisation and presentation of the collection belong to ALMA or its licensors. Official texts are reproduced from the public sources shown on each document, and ALMA claims no rights in them. References to and summaries of third-party works (for example academic works) remain subject to the rights of their owners. You may use what you find in Lex for your research, study and work, citing the source, within the limits of section 4.

14. Privacy

How we handle your personal data, including what is sent to the artificial intelligence models, is set out in the Lex Privacy Policy.

15. The App Store app

If you use the Lex app downloaded from the App Store, Apple's App Store terms also apply. These Terms govern the Lex service; Apple is not a party to them.

16. Complaints and disputes

If you have a problem, write to us at support@alma.dev. We try to sort it out quickly.

Complaints book. You can file a complaint in the electronic complaints book (Livro de Reclamações Eletrónico) at www.livroreclamacoes.pt.

Alternative dispute resolution. In a consumer dispute, you can turn to a consumer alternative dispute resolution body, for example:

  • Centro de Arbitragem de Conflitos de Consumo de Lisboa (CACCL), www.centroarbitragemlisboa.pt;
  • Centro Nacional de Informação e Arbitragem de Conflitos de Consumo (CNIACC), www.cniacc.pt, with supplementary competence across Portugal.

The full list of bodies is on the Portal do Consumidor at www.consumidor.gov.pt. In consumer disputes worth up to 5,000 euros, if the consumer chooses to submit them to a legally authorised consumer arbitration centre, ALMA is bound by that arbitration (Article 14(2) of Portuguese Law 24/96 of 31 July). If you live in another European Union Member State, you can get help from the European Consumer Centre in your country.

17. Governing law and courts

Portuguese law applies, without prejudice to the mandatory consumer protection rules of the country where you habitually reside. Consumers may bring proceedings in the courts of their domicile or in the courts of Portugal, and may use the alternative dispute resolution bodies listed above.

18. Language and versions

These Terms exist in Portuguese and in English. The Portuguese version prevails; where the meaning of a clause is in doubt, the meaning more favourable to the user prevails.

This is version 1, dated 30 October 2026. Versions: version 1, 30 October 2026 (current).

19. Points of contact and reporting unlawful content

Single point of contact for Member State authorities, the European Commission and the European Board for Digital Services (Article 11 of Regulation (EU) 2022/2065, the Digital Services Act) and for recipients of the service (Article 12): legal@alma.dev. Languages: Portuguese and English.

To report content you consider unlawful, write to legal@alma.dev with: an explanation of why you consider the content unlawful; exactly where it is (for example the link, or the name of the person who shared it with you and the topic's title); your name and email (optional for reports of child sexual abuse); and a statement that you believe in good faith that the information in your report is accurate and complete. We acknowledge receipt, examine the report diligently and tell you our decision and how you can contest it.
